Why do children lose creativity at school?
We want to tell you a story about creativity in children.
The most beautiful and complex thing scientists have discovered so far in our amazing human journey is not the expansion of the universe, nor is it the implosion of a star into a supernova nor the ability to split atoms or fuse them. Instead it is the marvel of the human brain, especially when the brain is young and very eager, growing at incredible speed. And this is found only in our children, nowhere else.
Their minds are innocent yet confident, eager to learn and explore everything and anything and they are not scared nor worried at taking a shot in the dark. It has been observed that at around the age of 2, the brain has more neurons than it will ever possess during the course of its lifetime. As a child, everyone has the potential to be a genius and to change the world and make it a better place.
This is because children are the masters of creativity. You need not look far, but into their eyes to see the potential they have to make the world a better place. You need to only look into their eyes to see how proud you are of them. Our children are indeed the better version of ourselves.
Unfortunately, our schools are not nurturing creativity enough for everyone. Schools tend to focus on teaching our children known answers to known questions and seldom teach them how to ask new questions. Schools tend to prioritise literacy and numeracy over creativity, destroying millions of years of creative evolution. Don't get me wrong, schools are important but they need an update.
Most schools are still preparing our children for the age of empires and the industrial revolution despite the new age of digital and soon to be, the age of imaginations where creativity will be the only currency. Schools are training our children to compete with robots when they should be nurturing their creativity to explore the unknown. Most academics and futurists agree that schools are hurting the creativity of our children. However to change the behemoth which is the education system in one go, would be an impossible task, harder than boiling the ocean.
We believe, the revolution for change should start at the grassroots, and this is where you, beloved parents, come into picture. It has to start with you and your child or children, at home, and strangely enough it could be when you are brushing your teeth.
The journey of change starts with the simplest step. Read the next post to discover how.
